        The Chemistry of Hot Springs

I study how chemistry shapes life in extreme environments. My research combines geochemical modeling, genomic sequencing, and laboratory cultivation of microorganisms to explore how environmental chemistry influences where microbes live and how they evolve. By uncovering these connections, my work helps us better understand life’s adaptability on Earth and guides the search for habitable environments beyond our planet. WHY? Discussing the chemistry of hot springs helps people understand how life and environment are deeply connected. Hot springs are natural laboratories where heat, water, and rock interact to create unique chemical conditions that shape which microbes can live there. By exploring their chemistry, we can learn how Earth’s systems sustain life, how environments change over time, and even gain clues about where life might exist on other planets.

        History of Lake Bonneville

My research focused on developing a high-resolution record of Lake Bonneville oscillations to determine past climate change. Lake Bonneville was a large ice-age lake that covered most of western Utah about 15,000 years ago. Teachers in many areas of the state can see evidence of Lake Bonneville shorelines just by walking outside. It's an important story for the geologic history of our state and helps teachers understand how scientists study climate changes that happened long before historical data collection.

Pass the Energy Please by Barbara Shaw McKinney

'Pass the Energy, Please!,' is an upbeat rhyming story written in poetry form (with beautiful illustrations). It is a great hook for helping teachers meet 5th Grade SEEd Standard 5.3.3 (with can be extended to food webs in 6th grade) by creatively and cleverly focusing on the movement of matter and how it cycles among plants, animals, and the environment. Students can develop and use a model of this process. This literature is an excellent extension resource because its poetic language builds essential science vocabulary and helps to inspire young independent learners while sharpening skills needed for reading informational texts.

Objective: Our goal is to demonstrate how literature can be used as a catalyst for developing analytical writing skills within the context of scientific inquiry. Using computational genomics to study disease in Pacific Islanders

I am currently studying Pacific Islander genomes to better understand the genetic factors that contribute to the increased rates of diabetes, kidney disease, and cardiovascular disease that affects this community. We are using a multi-omics approach to identify and characterize both common and rare genetic variants in Pacific Islanders that associate with disease. I think a better understanding of the challenges of genetics research and how we leverage technology to meet those challenges is fascinating. Teachers in UtSTA are inspiring the next generation of scientists. If the teachers understand this, they'll be better equipped to prepare the kids.
