  Keynote speaker Dr. Gary Nielson! In addition to the keynote, there will be 13 different themed strands throughout the day and 3 different breakout session for each to help you with your teaching curriculum with ideas, demos, lessons, etc. We hope you can join us for a great day that will help you and your students better appreciate science and science education.

  This session is led by Kate Strangfeld, a former middle school science and high school chemistry teacher and the founder of Bite Scized Education, a 501(c)3 nonprofit organization that develops curriculum and offers teacher professional learning around teaching science through the lens of Food and cooking. Strangfeld founded Bite Scized Education in 2023 using funds from an Educational Entrepreneurship Fellowship through the Harvard Graduate School of Education. Strangfeld also leads Harvard's Science and Cooking for Secondary Educators Program, which trains and reaches teachers across the country and researches teacher and student impact.

  Bite Scized Education is a 501(c)3 nonprofit organization. We create instructional resources and provide teacher professional learning to inspire and support teachers to teach science through the lens of food and cooking.

   Our resources are intended to be woven into a typical science curriculum. They are developed by teachers and are data- and research-driven.

  Through food, we aim to make science education more engaging and accessible for all students.

   Our vision is that students appreciate and are curious about how food and science shape their lives, communities, and the world around them. By extension, students are empowered to use food or science in their professional or personal paths to create meaningful impact in the world.

Map Link, NINE minute walk to the School. If you are driving East up Bengal Blvd: you will pass Brighton on the righthand side, go through the traffic circle, and the tennis courts are just past the church on the left. IF you get to the skate park, you've gone too far. (but you can also park at the skate park.) If you are heading west, down Bengal Blvd: (coming from Wasatch Blvd. or 215), you will pass the cottonwood heights rec center and soccer fields, then the skate park, and the tennis courts will be on your right hand side before the round about.

  As part of the application for all secondary science endorsements, it is a requirement that all Utah science teachers complete a Lab Safety Certification Course. This certification process helps to assure that all of our science teachers are knowledgeable about the practices necessary for safe lab experiences for students and themselves.

  This course is a four-week online class.

  This Lab Safety Certification Online Course meets the Safety Certification requirement for ALL Utah State Science Endorsements.

  IMPORTANT COURSE INFORMATION: 

  • The cost for this course is a $50 refundable registration fee,  if you are a UtSTA Member and a contracted teacher. 
  • Participants will also need to pay for .5 university credit of $11.50 directly to SUU. (Instructions coming soon.)  This fee is refundable if you are are a contracted teacher. It is nonrefundable if you are not a contracted teacher.  Refer to this document if you have any questions about refunds.
  • Upon successful completion of the course with a C or higher, UtSTA will reimburse you the $50 registration fee and the  SUU credits fee. You must be a contracted teacher with a public school/district to qualify for reimbursement.

  Our place in space and how we have come to this understanding, are the foundations on which this course is built.  We will explore the tools and laws of nature astronomers use to construct our model and understanding of the cosmos—both its structure and components.  From this informed foundation, we will address the fundamental question of are we alone within this context of our place in space.
  

  This Online Endorsement Course meets the Utah State Science Endorsement Course Requirements for endorsements:

  This is a content and NGSS pedagogy course. This course also incorporates the Utah SEEd Standards which include NGSS science practices, crosscutting concepts and disciplinary core ideas.  Lesson plan creation is part of the course.  Emphasis is on best practices used to teach this content in a classroom.  The estimated time commitment is 6-8 hours a week.  Weekly participation is required. 

  This 12 week course is only done over the set 12 week period.  Participants are not able to "move at your own pace" but work within the module assigned for that week.   Modules cannot be unlocked ahead of the scheduled time.

  This is an integrated introduction to the earth system stressing the geological, biological, chemical, and physical interactions among the atmosphere, ocean, and solid earth.
