2026 SPRING: Chemistry 1 for Teachers - Online Endorsement Course (29 Jan 2026)

Welcome to the university course Chemistry 1 for Teachers. This course will focus on atomic structure, compounds and their properties, reactions, and stoichiometric changes, states of matter, and end with energy changes. It's important to note that this is a college-level course and you will be expected to understand the material at a much higher level than you will likely incorporate in your classroom.

This is a content course that utilizes 3D pedagogy. This course does not provide a full understanding of 3D pedagogy, but incorporates the Utah SEEd Standards which include NGSS science practices, crosscutting concepts and disciplinary core ideas. Lesson plan creation is part of the course. Emphasis is on best practices used to teach this content in a classroom. The estimated time commitment is 6-8 hours a week. (This course does not count as the Three-Dimensional Science and Engineering Pedagogical Knowledge course required for some endorsements.)

This 12 week course is only done over the set 12 week period. Participants are not able to "move at your own pace" but work within the module assigned for that week. Modules cannot be unlocked ahead of the scheduled time.

This Online Endorsement Course meets the Utah State Science Endorsement Course Requirements for:

Chemistry 1: Principles of Chemistry 1
Secondary Core Science: General Chemistry

Upon successful completion, the participants will receive 3.0 Southern Utah University Credits.

Genetics is the study of heredity and how traits are passed from one generation to another, how these traits are affected by environmental factors, and the molecular basis for these traits. It requires background knowledge from both Biology and Chemistry to fully understand the concepts presented. It's important to note that this is a college-level course and you will be expected to understand the material at a much higher level than you will likely incorporate in your classroom.

This human anatomy teaching course has three main objectives that will be the focus of the course:

Identify and understand the essential principles of human anatomy including basic chemistry, cell and tissue studies, and an overview of all the major body systems.
Discuss current events in human anatomy.
Develop lessons and activities, using the content information, that can be used in your classrooms to help students better grasp and relate to the information.

Using computational genomics to study disease in Pacific Islanders

I am currently studying Pacific Islander genomes to better understand the genetic factors that contribute to the increased rates of diabetes, kidney disease, and cardiovascular disease that affects this community. We are using a multi-omics approach to identify and characterize both common and rare genetic variants in Pacific Islanders that associate with disease. I think a better understanding of the challenges of genetics research and how we leverage technology to meet those challenges is fascinating. Teachers in UtSTA are inspiring the next generation of scientists. If the teachers understand this, they'll be better equipped to prepare the kids.

Objective: Our goal is to demonstrate how literature can be used as a catalyst for developing analytical writing skills within the context of scientific inquiry. By using selected books as mentor texts, this session will guide teachers in initiating and enhancing students' analytical writing abilities, intertwined with scientific practices. Description: This course will focus on learning and teaching Astronomy. This week long course will include inquiry style learning with methods to reach and engage students in the study of Astronomy. Fabulous evening viewing opportunities occur each evening of the course. This is a field experience with night time viewing. You will be able to use a telescope to find objects in the sky during this workshop. The Castle Dale area has gorgeous night skies and Emery High School is very gracious to host the event. This UtSTA Astronomy workshop is much more than a paper pencil class and UtSTA looks forward to hosting you for the week.

Reading, Writing & Thinking Like Scientists: K–3 Classrooms in Action. Help young learners do more than read about science. In this one-day conference, explore how students can engage deeply with science through literacy, inquiry, and innovation. This conference focuses on practical ways to use reading, writing, and discussion as tools for sensemaking and integrating emerging tools like AI to support student thinking and discovery. Walk away with ready-to-use strategies and lessons that build strong readers while developing curious, capable young scientists. Join us as we collaborate, connect, and empower K–3 students to read, write, and think like scientists every day.
Join us at John Hancock CS (2890 Scarlet Rd, Eagle Mountain, UT 84005) for a one day professional learning that will transform your classroom. Two Sessions for specific grade level (K-3) in two hour sessions where presenters will take the participants through the learning sequence so they can experience the full sequence of using science as the lens for literacy and building the scientist in each of your students.
You have the option of receiving .5 SUU Graduate Credit for only $11.50 if you would like in place of the 6 relicensure points. Instructions coming soon for the SUU credit and the short assignment will be due by July 27th.

Chemistry 1 - UVU Credit -

Description: The course will focus on learning and teaching chemistry. Introduces you to properties of solutions, reactions rate and mechanisms, reversible reactions, systems at equilibrium (including gaseous, acid-base, and precipitate), nuclear chemistry, and polymer chemistry. This week-long chemistry course will include inquiry style learning with methods to reach and engage students in the study of chemistry. Taught at Westlake High School. Don Bastian a master chemistry teacher leads this course. Come away with new content knowledge, labs completed and with pedagogical skills to use when teaching chemistry.
